The Doobie Brothers are coming to Salt Lake City on June 11, 2023. The legendary band will perform at the Maverick Center. It’s an excellent time for a brief history of the band.

The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band formed in San Jose, California, in 1970. The band has had a successful career spanning several decades, with numerous hits and accolades to their name.

The original members of the band included Tom Johnston (guitar, vocals), Patrick Simmons (guitar, vocals), Dave Shogren (bass), and John Hartman (drums). They released their first album, “The Doobie Brothers,” in 1971, which featured a mix of rock, blues, and folk influences.

Their second album, “Toulouse Street,” released in 1972, marked a turning point for the band with the addition of Michael McDonald on keyboards, vocals, and songwriting. The album spawned the hit singles “Listen to the Music” and “Jesus is Just Alright.”

Over the years, the band’s sound evolved to incorporate more soul and R&B influences, primarily due to McDonald’s contributions. This culminated in their 1978 album “Minute by Minute,” which featured the hit singles “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute.” The album earned the band several Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

In the 1980s, the band experienced some lineup changes, with Johnston leaving the band and McDonald pursuing a successful solo career. However, the band continued releasing albums and tours, with Simmons taking on a greater songwriting and lead vocal role.

The Doobie Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, recognizing their contributions to rock music over the past five decades. Today, the band continues to tour and perform, with several original members still active in the group. Their enduring legacy is a testament to their talent, versatility, and ability to create timeless music that has stood the test of time.
