School starts in many of our districts this week! Granite district’s first day of school was August 16th. Well, that’s dumb, starting the school year on a Wednesday. Somebody needs to explain that to me. Jordon district starts on August 30th, Murray starts on August 28th, and Canyon’s district starts on Monday, August 21st. My point here people is what-in-the-crap happened to our kids getting an actual long summer? When I was in school back in The Jurassic Period, we got out after Memorial Day and didn’t have to go back to class until the Tuesday after Labor Day. That was the way it was…every year. You could count on it! That’s how we planned our cruddy summer vacations when my mom sent me to live with my dad for 2 months because they were divorced, and he made me weed his garden, mow his lawn, and paint his stupid fence. I hated summer! But, it was always 3 months long! Again, you could count on it.
Somehow, summer for our kids seems so much shorter than when we were growing up. And now, it won’t be long, that summer “feel” will be over, and it’ll be back to classes, back to the books, and back to making new friends. I didn’t have a lot of friends in school, in fact, the only real friend I had in high school was the one I made in wood shop. -JC
