Everything You Need To Know About ‘Talk Like A Pirate’ Day

International “Talk Like a Pirate” Day is Friday, Sept. 19, and swashbuckling captains all across the nation are celebrating this fine day.

The phenomenon started in 1995 by the self-proclaimed “pirate guys” John Baur and Mark Summers, and according to their website, what started out as an innocent game of raquetball soon turned into “Talk Like a Pirate Day”.

“The point is, there is no point,” Cap’n Slappy and the Webwench write on talklikeapirate.com. “And that’s what fun about Talk Like a Pirate Day specifically, and talking like a pirate in general.”

If you’re looking for some “advanced” pirate terms to pepper your conversations with today, try these:

  • Grog: A drink made with alcohol. “Drink up ye grog, me hearties!”
  • Bilge rat: A rat that lives on the lowest level of a ship, usually crawls around in smelly water. “Arr, ye test my patience, filthy bilge rat!”
  • Bung hole: Food provisions are stored in wooden casks. The “bung” is the barrel’s stopper, and the hole in the barrel is the “bung hole”.
